Yes! There is color in Schipperkes. Way back in 1885, when Schipperkes were just coming together to form as a documented breed, about 50 people got together that knew anything about them, and color was brought up there. However, although a few wanted color, the majority did not, and Schipperkes become known for being a black only, completely black breed! Most of their followers love that about them, loving also their reputation as a "little black devil". We like to think that Schipperkes and Halloween go together, and if you go to a show and look at their registered names, you will see many times a play on words surrounding their color... black, dark, night, midnight, and more....
This page is about giving information, it is not about the support of color in Schipperkes. There are a few breeders in other countries and even fewer here, who actively support the breed, show in UKC; and breed nice, if colored Schipperkes. There are still others who will breed ANYTHING that has papers that say Schipperke, so long as it it not "black". We respect the former, despise the latter! Colored Schipperkes are a DQ in AKC, but acceptable - most - in UKC, and they can also be shown in England and Australia... but not in Belgium and most "FCI" countries. This little Schipperke was produced in Belgium, and I guess she was quite a surprise to her breeders! I have personally never known of a Schipperke with this much white born in America, but there are records of Schipperkes born that were tri color throughout their history, as well as other colors. There are Schipperkes born in America with the occasionally white spot, and I have heard in England that there has been significantly more white. Below we will post pictures of colored Schipperkes - we asked for permission to use these so PLEASE do not take these pictures and post them elsewhere. Respect peoples' rights to their own pictures! |
